Spring has sprung here in Western North Carolina, ushering in a busy season of practice and projects for Urban Dharma. Check out the photos below to see what we've been up to recently, as well as for announcements about upcoming events! Drikung Forest Hermitage Work DayOn Sunday, April 21st, a group of dedicated volunteers met at the Drikung Forest Hermitage outside of Burnsville, NC to continue their efforts towards developing the hermitage site. After setting up the hermitage's first Buddha statue (kindly donated by a long-time practitioner and member of the UD community), Dr. Lye led the smoke-cleansing offering practice known as the “Source of All Auspiciousness," discovered in Tibet in the 16th century by Drikung Rinchen Puntsok. Finally, folks made quite a bit of progress in digging trenches, sowing seeds, planting flowers, and selecting a site for the first of the tent-platforms. The next work day at the Drikung Forest Hermitage will be Sunday, May 26th—stay tuned for more information. By then, we may have the foundation slab of our very first Dharma Hall (1.0) poured and cured! Continuing Meditation Series: Buddha's BreathOn Thursday, April 18th, we held the third (of four) sessions in the "Buddha's Breath" meditation series. Dr. Lye has been teaching from the text known as the “Ānāpānasati Sutta,” the Buddha’s instructions for cultivation through mindfulness of breathing. These courses have been recorded, and are available on the Drikung Dharmakirti Youtube channel. The fourth and final session of the series will be held this Thursday, April 25th in person and on Zoom at 7:30 PM New York Time. Upcoming: Buddha DayOn Saturday, May 25th, near the date designated as Vesak, the celebration of the birth, enlightenment, and death of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, Dr. Lye & Urban Dharma will celebrate “Buddha Day” alongside Rev. Teijo of Great Tree Zen Women's Temple, and Zen Center of Asheville. Reminder: Longevity EmpowermentOur April Saturday Amitayus practice will culminate in Dorjé Lopön Dr. Lye's conferring of the Longevity Empowerment of Amitayus in the tradition of Machik Drupé Gyalmo.
